Like most fruits, pawpaws are nutritious and rich in a number of vitamins and minerals.Īccording to Kentucky State University’s Pawpaw Research Project, 100 grams of ripe pawpaw fruit with skin provides ( 7): They have soft flesh and may have a custard-like texture. Pawpaws have a sweet taste that’s described as a blend of mango, banana, berries, and pineapple. However, color changes are not always reliable signs of ripeness, so you may need to rely on other signs to know when pawpaws are ready to be eaten. Ripe pawpaw flesh is yellow and has a smooth, soft texture ( 6). Immature pawpaws are generally light green, and the fruit may exhibit a slight yellowish color change when ripening. Ripe pawpaws have a strong, fruity, and floral aroma and are soft to the touch like a ripe avocado or peach ( 5, 6). The texture of ripe pawpaw is described as creamy and custard-like. Plus, a number of commercial pawpaw cultivars are grown in the United States, including Overleese, Taytwo, Mary (Foos) Johnson, and Sunflower, which may have flavor differences ( 4, 5, 6). However, it’s important to note that there are several types of wild pawpaw, some of which don’t have a pleasant taste. Pawpaws are prized for their flavor, which is described as a tropical blend of mango, banana, berries, and pineapple ( 3, 4). Pawpaws are oblong green fruits that have large, black, lima-bean-shaped seeds. They’re the largest edible fruit native to North America and have a sweet, tropical taste. Pawpaws are the fruit of the Asimina triloba tree, which is native to the eastern United States and southern Canada. What’s more, the wide distribution of pawpaw throughout the Eastern United States is likely partly due to Indigenous People growing and trading it, unintentionally dispersing its seeds across the region ( 3).įossilized remains of pawpaws have been found all over the Northeastern United States, including along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and at archaeological sites in several states, including Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, and Mississippi ( 3). Indigenous People used the bark of the pawpaw tree to make rope and cloth as well. It’s important to note that, although the first documented report of this fruit that scholars have access to comes from a Portuguese explorer in 1541, Indigenous People started growing and eating pawpaw long before that ( 1). The Native American term for the fruit was assemina ( 3). They’re considered the largest edible fruit native to North America, measuring 2–6 inches (5–16 cm) and 1–3 inches wide (3–7 cm) ( 3).Īccording to historical documentation, “pawpaw” is a Spanish name given to the fruit by members of conquistador Hernando de Soto’s party during a colonization attempt in the Southeastern United States. Pawpaws are the northernmost member of the Annonaceae plant family, which consists mainly of tropical and subtropical plants ( 1, 2).

While single-use batteries are convenient, they are exactly that: Use them one time dispose of them. Thus we conclude three weeks of rechargeable battery columns. There's more profit in selling single-use batteries than in selling plastic sleeves for rechargeables at $1 or $1.50 each. The point is, I've never seen these spacers for rechargeable batteries sold in brick-and-mortar stores. It's even possible to find adapter spacers that will convert AAA rechargeables into a C or D battery size. (Yes, it's cheaper to buy the two aforementioned offers than it is the combined one.) For some of each, there is a package deal: Four C adapters and four D adapters for $20. There are also six D-size sleeves offered for $8. A set of 10 C-size ones are sold on Amazon for $10. The AA battery is inserted into the sleeve, which comes with a filler to hold the smaller battery in place in its new, oversize slot in the electronic gadget. Think of the spacers as a sumo-wrestling costume that makes the wearer look more like a helium balloon than a person. The spacers come in two sizes to make a AA into a C- or D-cell battery. The run time will be reduced, but the cost of replacing a single-use battery won't be there. The flashlight or whatever will still be as bright or work as well. How does that work? There are "spacers" available for AA batteries: Simply put the AA in the spacer - which come in sizes for C- and D-cell batteries - and insert them into whatever electronics the C- or D-cells were powering. The answer to the flashlight riddle, then, is this: The larger batteries that once ran the flashlight have been replaced with smaller AA batteries. Lost an old Master Lock combination? There's a process to retrieve it.A flashlight for the masses? Small LED proved indispensable during hurricane.Rechargeable batteries perform as well as alkalines, without the corrosion.Top battery chargers for the simple person or the tinkerer. These batteries are so expensive that one website selling them offers: "Pay in four interest-free installments for orders over $50.00." (Other brands are available for about $15 for two - but they'll need a D-cell charger, which adds to the cost.) And they are expensive: a two-pack of D batteries that recharge using a built-in USB port is $30 online. Finding C- and D-cell rechargeables is far more difficult. And there are good ones that match the performance of national brands, but without the price tag. Rechargeable AA and AAA batteries are common. When I started the change-over from using alkaline batteries - which are sometimes prone to leak and thereby corrode the electronics they power - for rechargeable ones (which are far more economical and rarely leak), I didn't know the answer to that riddle either. Riddle me this: I have a flashlight that uses D-cell batteries. The Magic Photo Mirror FLITE is manufactured in a modified lightweight flight case, enabling easy lifting and moving. Due to the low prevalence of Dal-negative dogs, it is difficult to find a compatible donor for a Dal-negative dog with anti- Dal antibodies. It is unclear how the latter dogs acquired the presumptive anti- Dal antibodies. Dal-reactive antibodies were only found in previously transfused dogs, but we have seen cases of transfusion reactions in Dal-negative dogs after the first transfusion. ** Of 43-75 dogs tested, 100% of non-Dalmation dogs were positive for Dal, 58% were positive DEA-1 (extended gel), 13% were DEA-3 positive, 100% were DEA-4 positive, and 23% were positive for DEA-7 ( Kessler et al 2010). *Incidence is breed-dependent, e.g., most Greyhounds are negative for DEA 1.1 (explaining their choice as blood donors) but are positive for DEA 3, whilst large numbers of Labrador retrievers are DEA 1.1 positive. Neonatal isoerythrolysis has been reported in DEA 1 negative female dogs (previously sensitized to DEA 1 positive cells) mated to DEA 1.1 positive male dogs. Therefore, crossmatching in dogs does not need to be done on the first transfusion. Rather, transfusion of incompatible blood is hemolysed more rapidly (within 4 to 5 days) than compatible blood would be (so-called delayed hemolytic reaction). Although DEA 3-, 5- and 7-negative dogs do have naturally occurring antibodies to DEA 3, 5 and 7 positive red cells, these blood groups do not incite severe hemolytic reactions. In an acute hemolytic transfusion reaction, the lifespan of incompatible transfused erythrocytes ranges from minutes to 12 hours. The normal lifespan of compatible transfused erythrocytes in dogs is approximately 21 days. As these dogs do not have naturally occurring antibodies, a reaction will only be seen after sensitization of the dog through exposure to DEA 1.1 or 1.2 positive blood (antibody production takes 7-10 days after exposure). New blood groups in dogs are being detected, including those in Dalmations, Doberman Pinschers and Shih Tzus, amongst other breeds) (Dal) ( Blias et al 2007, Goulet et al 2017) and Kai-1 (IgM) and 2 (IgG) ( Euler et al 2016).Īcute hemolytic transfusion reactions only occur in DEA 1.1 and 1.2 negative dogs. Naturally occurring antibodies occur in 20% of DEA 3-negative, 10% of DEA 5-negative, and 20-50% of DEA 7-negative dogs. Dogs can be positive for either (not both) DEA 1.1 or 1.2 or are negative for both. The major antigens are DEA 1.1 and DEA 1.2. These are illustrated in the table below. There are 8 major blood groups in the dog, labeled as DEA (dog erythrocyte antigen) 1 to 8. Since administration of typed negative blood will not prevent a transfusion reaction to less well-characterized red cell antigens, crossmatching should always be performed in an individual that has been previously exposed to blood group antigens. Blood type compatibility (or incompatibility) is determined in the laboratory using crossmatching procedures. Ideally, any animal that is routinely used as a blood donor should be blood typed for the most common antigens that produce a hemolytic reaction and (ideally) should be negative for these antigens. the Comparative Coagulation Laboratory of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University, the Equine Blood Testing Laboratory in Kentucky, the Stormont Laboratory in California). induce a hemolytic reaction) can cause agglutination and/or hemolysis of red cells.īlood typing (for the most common blood groups) is offered by a few specialized veterinary diagnostic laboratories (e.g. The most common route of exposure is from previous blood transfusions, however there are less obvious sources of exposure, such as vaccinations that contain foreign red blood cell antigens. Acquired antibodies are produced after exposure to an incompatible blood type, which is from exposure to blood or products containing erythrocytes or their antigens. some will not produce a transfusion reaction. Naturally occurring antibodies occur in most species and vary in their pathological significance, i.e. There are two types of antibodies to blood group antigens naturally occurring antibodies and antibodies acquired after exposure to the blood group antigen. Knowledge of blood types in the different species is important as transfusion of incompatible blood (the donor animal has a different blood type from the recipient animal) can result in severe hemolytic transfusion reactions and even death, in some instances. In humans, there is the ABO system of blood types, whereas animals have a variety of different blood types. Blood types (or groups) are determined by specific antigens found on the surface of erythrocytes. So, maybe that’s why I don’t understand what’s to come. “A word to my fellow American Jews,” she begins her tweet. On such laurels, it seems, she rests her “argument”: Ioffe wears her education (Princeton alum) and Soviet immigrant background (anti-semitism/Jew cred) on her sleeve. Let us parse, in an attempt to understand the unfathomable depths of irrationality and hatred underlying Ioffe’s outburst. Julia Ioffe, the Russian-American journalist who profiled Melania Trump (pictured), received photos on Twitter of her face superimposed on a mug shot from Auschwitz. No doubt, she considered her declaration to be profoundly insightful. On Saturday, in the immediate aftermath of the horror, she considered it appropriate to engage in the crudest Jew-bashing imaginable. Ioffe holds forth on matters of national security, foreign policy, and related topics in various American publications. And so far, at least, Ioffe’s new employers have struck a more tolerant tone: Since Ioffe was already on her way out at Politico the censure doesn’t really count as a firing, per se.
